Fire Safety of External Cladding

May 10, 2017

There’s no denying how devastating a fire can be: they are capable of completely destroying buildings in a matter of minutes. The modern external metal cladding systems that Simmers Contracts Ltd can supply and install are heavily regulated and have a high level of resilience against fire.

In recent years, we have seen changes to UK fire safety laws and building regulations following fires here in the UK, in China, and in the United Arab Emirates as recently as 2015, which saw the flames spread rapidly in the external cladding. It is therefore of the utmost importance that external cladding systems have a level of resilience against fire.

As a leading cladding installer, we strive to provide a cladding service that is not only of the highest quality but that puts safety first, and with over 60 years of experience in the industry, we have demonstrated our ability using a diverse range of cladding materials and built up systems.

Our cladding projects have ranged from a 9 m² domestic garage to a 20,000 m² warehouse complex. We work with a range of cladding products, including Kingspan and TATA insulated composite panels, single skin plastic coated, polyester and non-con drop lining products, fibre cement products as well as various rain screen systems.  Our team know the legislation regarding fire safety of external cladding inside outside and will always ensure that our processes adhere to them.

The importance of external cladding to fire safety can best be seen with the fire that engulfed Dubai’s The Address Downtown hotel on New Year’s Eve 2015. The cause of this fire was a fault in a spotlight, on the exterior of the building’s 15th floor, however, the flames spread quickly due to falling debris and combustible exterior cladding.

At Simmers Contracts Ltd, we don’t just provide external cladding for new builds, we can also provide a simple solution to updating existing buildings by cladding over, or by removing and replacing existing materials.
